Biffy Clyro reveal new double album and single names - BBC News

Newsbeat reporter Biffy Clyro will release new single Stingin' Belle on 17 September

Biffy Clyro say that their sixth studio album will be called Opposites.

Front man Simon Neil introduced the first single from the double record on Zane Lowe's Radio 1 show, a track called Stingin' Belle.

"Each album is the exact opposite vibe to the other lyrically," said Neil talking about the album concept.

"One's about putting things in the worst possible way and thinking you're getting yourself into a hole. The other looks at things more positively."

The band had previously announced that the double album would consist of two parts titled The Land At The End Of Our Toes and another titled The Sand At The Core Of Our Bones.

A release date is still to be confirmed.

The band debuted three more tracks from Opposites at this year's Download Festival - Modern Magic Formula, The Joke's On Us and Victory Over The Sun.

No limits

Speaking from their studio in Los Angeles, Simon Neil said they had picked new track Stingin' Belle because it represented the album.

"It was one of the first songs that really clicked when we were recording it," he said.

"We've been playing that one in the practice room for about a year or so.

Biffy Clyro have also played the Isle of Wight Festival this summer and will perform at London's iTunes Festival on 22 September.

Simon Neil says the new double record feels like the end of an era.

"We've been able to spend time [on the record]," he said.

"Anything we wanted to try we've been able to try. Hopefully we've mastered it on this record. I hope when people hear it they really love it.

"I think we've gone as far as we can. We're still keeping things musical.

"We're still being as weird as we've always been but also making it an enjoyable listen.

"We wanted to make the first double album that you could enjoyably listen to from start to finish."

China big city spenders confound global gloom - survey - Reuters UK

BEIJING Aug 1 (Reuters) - Consumer optimism in China's biggest cities rose to its highest in nearly three years in the second quarter of 2012 even as global economic gloom knocked the national average down from a more than six-year high, a survey showed on Wednesday.

The rise in confidence among consumers in China's so-called Tier 1 cities was fuelled by a combination of improving job prospects, better personal finances and a greater willingness to spend, said the survey by global information company, Nielsen.

The Tier 1 city consumer confidence index was the only one of five regional sub-indexes to rise quarter-on-quarter, but the bounce to 107 from 101 in the first three months of the year still left China's big city sophisticates lagging their rural cousins according to the quarterly survey of 3,500 consumers.

Rural consumers remained the most optimistic - they have been since the first quarter of 2011 - despite the regional confidence index registering a six-point quarterly drop to 113.

Growth in the world's second-largest economy was fuelled by strong domestic spending in the first half of the year, and China has said it is a top priority to boost consumption as a means of adjusting its economic structure.

China's cities are divided into tiers for administrative purposes. Tier 1 comprises China's four biggest cities, Tier 2 the key provincial capitals, with Tiers 3 and 4 established by population size and economic output. Rural areas are separate.

Rural consumers had the highest confidence level on employment prospects, with 92 percent saying the jobs outlook was excellent or good, unchanged from the first quarter survey.

Tier 1 consumers were next most optimistic about jobs - and again the only group registering a quarter-on-quarter improvement - with 59 percent describing job prospects over the next 12 months as excellent or good.

Tier 1 consumers were particularly upbeat about service sector job opportunities - vital to Beijing's plan to rebalance an economy mainly focused on manufacturing and investment.

China's consumers on average remain among the most optimistic internationally.

While the headline China index dropped to its lowest since the third quarter of 2011, the reading of 105 was still 14 points above the world average in the Nielsen global survey of consumer confidence and spending intentions that polled more than 28,000 consumers in 56 countries.

TIER 2 TURNS DOWN

But consumers in Tier 2, Tier 3 and Tier 4 cities all cited a reduction in job prospects for the coming year - the sub-index for Tier 2 sank 14 points to at least a four-quarter low.

China's overall labour market, however, remains tight with official figures showing more job vacancies nationwide than there have been for around a decade, despite six straight quarters of slowing growth and an export downturn that is biting into the vast manufacturing sector.

Tier 2 consumers also suffered the sharpest drop in confidence about the health of their personal finances.

A slowing economy and reduced job prospects were cited as souring outlooks to leave only 58 percent of respondents seeing excellent and good prospects in the year ahead, down 13 points on the quarter.

China's top leaders said on Tuesday they would enhance pro-growth policies in the second half of the year, although there are signs of stabilisation in the economy.

The overall decline in consumer confidence unsurprisingly pushed down the national willingness to spend in China to its lowest in three quarters, though Tier 1 consumers again bucked the trend with a fourth straight quarter of improvement.

The survey showed that consumers aged 30-39 were more willing to spend than those below 30 for the first time since the last quarter of 2011.

Digital appliances, home appliances and furniture top shopping lists for both demographics. Some 44 percent of Chinese consumers under 30 plan to buy digital appliances versus 35 percent of those aged 30-39.

The annual rate of retail sales growth in China has slowed in recent months, but remains firmly in double digits.

Domestic consumption was revealed to be the biggest driver of economic output in the first half of 2012 when data was published last month, contributing 4.5 percentage points to the overall rate of 7.6 percent. Twitter has come under fire for banning a journalist who tweeted critical comments about US broadcaster NBC.

Guy Adams, the Independent's Los Angeles bureau chief, published NBC exec Gary Zenkel's email address on the site as protest about the way the broadcaster covered the London Olympics opening ceremony.

He tweeted, "The man responsible for NBC pretending the Olympics haven't started yet is Gary Zenkel. Tell him what u think!"

Adams was disgruntled that NBC didn't air the ceremony live to viewers on the west coast of the US, citing a six-hour time delay as a "money-grabbing" move by the network.

The Twits

NBC says that Twitter alerted it to the tweet containing Zenkel's email address and banned Adams because posting other people's private information without their permission is against its user rules.

Its rules do state, "You may not publish or post other people's private and confidential information, such as credit card numbers, street address or Social Security/National Identity numbers, without their express authorization and permission" – although it makes no explicit reference to email addresses.

NBC and Twitter are currently working together on an Olympics Hub, curating tweets from athletes, fans and NBC staff throughout the Games.

In other Twitter-related news, police have arrested a 17-year-old for baiting diver Tom Daley after he came fourth in the synchronised diving 10m platform event on Monday afternoon.

Daley's father passed away last year, and so disappointed was Twitter user 'Rileyy69' with Daley's medalless performance began by sending a reply to Daley saying, "You let your dad down I hope you know that."

Daley retweeted the offending tweet to his 797,582 followers, prompting 29,025 retweets and a heated Twitter backlash against 'Rileyy69', whose account has now been suspended.

According to the police, 'Rileyy69''s has been arrested on suspicion of malicious communications - although the arrest is more likely to be related to later, more agressive tweets including actual death threats.

Example album due out in November, says British rapper - BBC News

Example says his fourth studio album should be out by November.

The British rapper and singer released his last record, Playing in the Shadows, in August 2011.

"I went off the back of the last tour into writing this," the 30-year-old said. "Last year the album was out in August and we had four singles off the album.

"The week my last album came out I already had the song titles and album title for this next album."

Since then the artist says he has been trying to complete the recording while he had time between gigs.

"Between the arena tour and the European tour and festivals I've been finalising mixing down the album," he said.

"I've got a little bit more to do now and it should be done in the next few weeks and released in November.

"This album's been made everywhere. It's been made on planes and trains.

"I was in Australia last October doing Park Life tour and I was on a plane with Benga.

"We pretty much made a song from scratch on a four-hour flight which I ended up vocaling in Melbourne and then I got the guitars replayed in London and then I redid the rap in LA."

Example will also announce a 16-date UK arena tour just before his appearance at V Festival next month.

"There are some very exciting support acts," he said. "So watch out for that one."

MADRID (Reuters) - Capital flight from Spain gathered pace in May and the central government deficit rose further above target in June, taking the country two steps closer to the full-scale bailout it is desperate to avoid.

Outflows rose to 41.3 billion euros (32.3 billion pounds) as the government's rescue of one its biggest banks hit already fragile investor confidence and triggered a plea for European aid worth up to 100 billion euros for the country's lenders.

In all, 163 billion euros - or around 16 percent of economic output - left Spain between January and May, with domestic banks sending money abroad, foreign lenders pulling out cash and mostly non-resident investors dumping domestic assets.

Over the last 11 months, funds equivalent to 26 percent of GDP exited the country, Tuesday's data from the Bank of Spain showed.

Spain's struggling economy, which is expected to remain in recession well into next year, is at the centre of the euro zone debt crisis, and rising refinancing costs risk shutting the country out of international debt markets.

Domestic demand has stalled since the crisis started four years ago, hitting a service sector that accounts for around 70 percent of the economy, while sky-high unemployment rates have further eroded consumer confidence.

Retail sales fell by 5.2 percent year-on-year on a calendar-adjusted basis in June, separate data showed on Tuesday, marking a 24th straight month of declines.

"These figures are proof that the Spanish economy continues in recession and a drop in retail sales could indicate a GDP contraction of around 2 percent this year," economist at Madrid broker M&G Valores Nicolas Lopez said.

"For the moment there's no sign this is going to change in the medium term."

SQUARING THE CIRCLE

With tax revenues falling sharply as the recession deepens, Spain reported a deficit of 4 percent of GDP on its central government accounts in the first half of the year, above a goal of 3.5 percent set for the whole of 2012.

That target could be eased as Spain decides later in the year how to use an extra 1 percent cushion granted by the European Union in July when the country's deficit target was widened to 6.3 percent for 2012 from 5.3 percent initially.

The government announced a new 65-billion-euro austerity package in July, two months after stepping in to prop up major lender Bankia.

In June, it requested help from Europe to recapitalise its banks, battered by the collapse of a decade-long real estate bubble in 2008.

But the initiatives failed to calm investors for more than a few days, and Tuesday's gloomy numbers will do nothing to ease pressure on the bond yields that Spain needs keep from rising to avert a full-fledged bailout.

The premium investors pay to buy Spanish over German debt was around 532 basis points on Tuesday, far below last week's euro-era highs on hopes the European Central Bank will announce stimulus measures, helping to bring Spanish and Italian borrowing costs down.

Tuesday's data showed Spanish and non-domestic banks moved 31.9 billion euros out of the country in May. The headline figure compared with total outflows of 26.6 billion euros in April and a peak of 66 billion euros in March.

Plummeting domestic demand was reflected in May current account numbers also published on Tuesday by the central bank and showing a deficit of 754 million euros, narrowing sharply from 3.4 billion euros in the same month of 2011.

The gap shrank on a lower trade deficit and a lower primary income deficit - the difference between money paid abroad and money received.

The trade gap stood at 1.5 billion euros, down from 3 billion euros a year earlier, as exports rose 5.5 percent while imports dropped 2.1 percent.

The government, which expects the economy to shrink 1.5 percent this year and 0.5 percent in 2013, has passed some of the deepest budget cuts in decades to deflate one of the euro zone's largest budget deficits. The gap stood at 8.9 percent in 2011.

The tax hikes also passed under the austerity programme, including a 3 point rise in value-added tax, are expected to further dent high street spending.

"(Spain) needs more time to rebalance the economy and hit the deficit targets. The current framework is making Spain dig itself into a slightly bigger hole," Guillaume Menuet, economist at Citi in London, said.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Consumer confidence unexpectedly rose in July as Americans were more optimistic about the short-term outlook than they were about their current conditions, according to a private sector report released on Tuesday.

The Conference Board, an industry group, said its index of consumer attitudes climbed to 65.9 from a upwardly revised 62.7 in June, topping economists' expectations for a decline to 61.5.

June was originally reported as 62.0.

Despite the improvement, confidence still remains at historically low levels, Lynn Franco, director of The Conference Board Consumer Research Center, said in a statement.

"While consumers expressed greater optimism about short-term business and employment prospects, they have grown more pessimistic about their earnings. Given the current economic environment - in particular the weak labor market - consumer confidence is not likely to gain any significant momentum in the coming months," said Franco.

The expectations index improved to 79.1 from 73.4, while the present situation index edged down to 46.2 from 46.6.

Consumers' labor market assessment was mixed as the "jobs plentiful" index slipped to 7.8 percent from 8.3 percent, while the "jobs hard to get" index also fell to 40.8 percent from 41.2 percent.

The view in six months from now was more optimistic, with 17.6 percent expecting to see more jobs, up from 14.8 percent in June.

But consumers were more concerned about price increases, with expectations for inflation in the coming 12 months rising to 5.4 percent from 5.3 percent.
