Mangalore: RSS Collage on DK Police Website Raises Eyebrows

Mangalore, May 27 (Bangalore Mirror): As faux pas go, this one is of gigantic proportions. The official website (www.dkpolice.org) of the Dakshina Kannada district police displayed a collage of pictures which appeared to extol the virtues of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on its home page. The collage showed RSS volunteers in their trademark khakhi shorts marching in order and engaging in social activities.

Administrative arms of the government are supposed to be secular, but the pictures suggest otherwise and are cause for alarm, especially since pubs and churches in Mangalore, the headquarters of the district, have repeatedly borne attacked, allegedly by Hindu activists.

The Dakshina Kannada police is probably the first unit in the state to use the Internet as a tool to build a connect between police and the public. B Dayananda, the former superintendent of police (SP) of the district, had launched a blog (spdk.blogspot.com), while the website was launched in 2009. It is being revamped by Abhishek Goyal, the current SP.

The collage has been on the website for more than a year and has seen more than 2 lakh visitors. But when contacted, Goyal said, I am unaware of this. Its a bad mistake. The website is still in the process of being re-launched. The developers, Hyderabad-based Zest Wings, are doing the revamping of the website free of cost and they must have used random pictures for testing. We will take immediate action.

Within minutes of the call, the entire site was pulled down and replaced by a single page which bore the message This site is under construction.

Pratap Reddy, the inspector general of police (Western range) was unavailable for comment, but AR Infant, the in-charge DG&IGP of the state, said he was unaware of the images. Police department websites are meant for the department and the public, Infant said. I was unaware of it. I will look into it and speak to officers concerned.

BJP prepones ousted RSS pracharak Sanjay Joshi's trip - indiatoday.intoday.in

As the BJP revealed its ace in its national executive by projecting Modi as the most powerful man in the party, Modi once again showed his vindictive nature, making it clear that nothing is forgotten and no one is forgiven.

While his elevation had come at the cost of Sanjay Joshi, the otherwise popular RSS 'pracharak', who was also an organisational secretary of the party in Gujarat until 2001, BJP had to pack Joshi off to Lucknow by air on Saturday evening even though he was scheduled to travel through Gujarat by train on Sunday.

Fear had grabbed Modi camp on Saturday as SMSs from anti-Modi factions of the Sangh Parivar started doing rounds about Joshi's travel through Gujarat and plans to welcome him in various railway stations.

Talks of some senior and disenchanted leaders from BJP meeting him in the process too started making the rounds. Before it was late, the possibility was nipped. Joshi was asked to fly.

On his part, Joshi maintained that he is rushing to Lucknow as municipal elections are due therein. But that understandably remained the "official" screensaver. What has surprised Modi's critics as well as analysts alike is the prudence of such an action at a delicate point like this.

All said and done, Joshi continues to inspire affection among a large chunk of party workers in Gujarat unlike Modi who, over the years, has gone on to become the identity of the party in the state making the party structure irrelevant.

"At a point when there is so much talk about Joshi's resignation at Modi's behest, barring him to travel through Gujarat, Modi only legitimised Joshi as a recognized political rival within the party," said an analyst.

"After this Sanjay Joshi's position will only be strengthened within the party and in all likelihood the intra-party counter-edifice for Narendra Modi will emerge," he added.

This is not the first time that Modi has created a rallying point for forces inimical to him.

Last year the controversial IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt was arrested after a junior cop KD Panth had filed a criminal complaint against him.

While Bhatt was released later on bail, he garnered wide sympathy and went on to earn a celebrity status for himself for fighting Narendra Modi.

"The move to stop Sanjaybhai from travelling through Gujarat by train clearly shows that Narendra Modi is scared of him," said Gordhan Zadafia, the president of Mahagujarat Janata Party (MJP), an offshoot of BJP in Gujarat.

The MJP was planning a series of programmes at various railway stations to welcome Joshi on Sunday. "In the process, he has only recognised his rival within the party, something that you don't normally do in politics," Zadafia added.
