MUMBAI/LATUR, 20 JUNE: Questioning Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar's credentials to decide about the post of Prime Minister in 2014, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat today affirmed his organisation's resolve to back pro-Hindutva Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi (file photo) for the PM's office.
By publicly proclaiming support to Mr Modi at an RSS camp in the Latur town of Maharashtra on Wednesday, Mr Bhagwat also sent a clear signal to Mr Modi's detractors in the BJP. In a rare spirited defence of Mr Modi, albeit without naming him, the RSS chief blasted the Bihar CM for his “India needs a secular prime minister” remarks.
“Will Nitish decide on who will make a good Prime Minister? One who propounds Hindutva should be the Prime Minister since the social structure of the country is based on Hindutva and this land belongs to Hindus,” said Mr Bhagwat.
Like other NDA parties, the RSS also wants the BJP to clarify its choice for the PM's office in advance. The Janata Dal (United) and Shiv Sena on Tuesday demanded the BJP to come clean on the issue of the future Prime Minister as it is not a prerogative of the senior partner in the NDA to decide its future leader.
The JD-U and the Shiv Sena agree that the BJP should desist from naming the PM nominee unilaterally without the approval of other constituents. Shiv Sena executive president Mr Udhav Thackeray at his party's anniversary rally on Tuesday evening said: "Endorsing Mr Pranab Mukherjee for President should not be seen as breaking ranks with the NDA and supporting the Congress. " He said the Shiv Sena would stay with the NDA and would like to see it Prime Minister in 2014.
The RSS chief exhorted volunteers (swayamsevaks) to stay united and defend the spirit of Hindutva. Mr Bhagwat said the Bihar CM's untimely demand for a secular person for the Prime Minister's office was “selfish” with “assured votes” in mind.
Nitish's attack brings RSS and Modi closer - MSN India
Mumbai: The chasm between the RSS and the Janata Dal (United) over the issue of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi is getting wider by the day.
On Wednesday, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat slammed Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over his statement that the prime ministerial candidate in the 2014 parliamentary elections should be 'secular'.
Bhagwat, who was in Latur addressing a gathering of RSS volunteers, claimed that Nitish was playing vote-bank politics. "Nitish Kumar has said NDA's prime ministerial candidate for 2014 elections should be secular. What do you mean by a secular Prime Minister? Why not a Hindutvawadi Prime Minister?"
Bhagwat claimed that Nitish has made the statement for his own personal gain. "Leaders like Nitish Kumar should not make such statements for their own vote banks and personal gains," he said.
Coming down hard on Nitish Kumar, the RSS chief asked, "Will Nitish decide what sort of person makes a good Prime Minister?"
He added, "Hinduism is the religion of humanism. You are right and we are also right. Hinduism follows this broad philosophy."
