JD(U) has alliance with BJP, not RSS: Nitish Kumar - Economic Times
"JD(U) has a long standing alliance with BJP and not RSS...I stand by what I have said in an interview," he said, referring to his view on a secular person to be projected as the NDA's prime ministerial candidate.
"I did not take name of any individual," he told reporters on the sidelines of his Janata Durbar in reference to his secular NDA prime ministerial candidate demand being read as an attempt to undermine Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi's prime ministerial ambitions.
Apparently seeking to link his secular NDA prime ministerial candidate plank to the foundation of ties between JD(U) and BJP in 1996, Kumar said his party had formed an alliance on the agenda against scrapping of Article 370 of the Constitution and Uniform Civil Code, besides judicial or negotiated settlement of Ayodhya dispute.
JD(U) will not compromise with dilution in any of these core issues vis-a-vis its relations with BJP, he said.
On the ties between JD(U) and BJP in Bihar, Kumar said the two parties had come together under the banner of the NDA in 1999 with a tactical understanding to defeat the then ruling party, he said referring to the RJD-led government in the state that time.
New World Bank chief open to advising rich nations - Reuters UK
WASHINGTON |
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The new head of the World Bank said on Monday he was willing to let the global development lender advise troubled developed nations like Greece, a major shift for an institution that has focused on the world's poorest.
While Jim Yong Kim emphasized that his top priority would be to protect developing nations at a "pivotal moment" for a world economy that is losing steam rapidly, he said the bank could also deploy its technical know-how to help richer nations with structural problems.
"We only go into countries when asked, but I feel the kind of expertise we have could be relevant in many, many countries in the world, including high-income countries," the Korean-born American told reporters on his first day on the job.
"My staff feel they have the relevant experience that could add value ... if that is the case and we are asked, I could be open to the possibility" of helping Greece, he added.
Former World Bank chief Robert Zoellick had pushed back at the idea of the bank getting involved in Greece. He said on June 14 that if the bank had gone in "as a reform taskmaster for the Greek government ... it might not be as productive for Greece as it would be harmful to the bank."
Still, many development experts argue the bank's decades of experience working with governments to improve their ability to improve tax collection, social programs, combat corruption and attract investment could help countries like Greece or Portugal that struggle with these issues.
An international bailout for debt-burdened Greece has kept the country in the euro zone but has come at the price of deep spending cuts, increased poverty and unemployment.
One idea bank officials have discussed is for the European Commission to fund World Bank technical advice in Greece.
By charging for its advice, the World Bank would boost its own revenues at a time lending returns are set to decline as more borrowers gain access to capital markets. Big bank shareholders, like the United States, are also cutting budgets and would be hard pressed to persuade their legislatures to pony up more money for the World Bank.
"We are not talking about the World Bank investing massive amounts of finances in high-income countries," Kim said. "Where we feel we can add value is in the technical support around some of the structural issues that some countries are facing."
The idea already has been informally debated among the bank's shareholders. "I would encourage the bank to do it as long as it does not involve resources that are meant to go to developing countries," said one World Bank board official from a large developing country.
WORLD BANK READY TO HELP
Kim, a physician and former head of Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, has relied on support from U.S. Treasury advisers as he prepared for his new job.
He takes the presidency at a time the euro zone debt crisis is beginning to exact a wider global toll.
Growth is slowing in emerging economies from China to India to Brazil, with developing countries feeling the effects of tighter bank lending and a drop in trade financing - problems Kim will have to address as the head of the world's top development lender.
As Europe struggles to get a handle on its crisis, new manufacturing data in China, the world's second-largest economy, on Monday showed a further decline in export orders.
Slowing global growth will affect already scarce government revenues in the poorest countries, which could force them to turn to the World Bank for more financial assistance.
World Bank assistance to middle-income countries could also increase if many find themselves unable to obtain the financing they need in the market.
The World Bank stepped up lending to developing countries in 2009 as the global financial crisis spread, providing a record $100 billion to borrowers.
Kim said the World Bank financial position was "very strong" and it was ready to support middle income and poor countries should they need assistance again.
"We feel that especially in low and middle-income countries we are ready to support those countries," he said.
Unlike previous heads of the World Bank, Kim is not a politician, banker or career diplomat. Instead, his life work has focused on bringing healthcare to the poor, whether fighting tuberculosis in Haiti and Peru or tackling HIV/AIDS in Russian prisons.
Addressing critics who see his lack of economics training as a weakness, Kim said he had worked in development throughout his career and has extensive experience working with the World Bank tackling difficult problems in poor countries.
"I feel that I share a passion for development and poverty alleviation with the World Bank staff and come into the organisation feeling very close to them in terms of why they come here," he said.

After 75 years, team to hunt for Amelia Earhart's plane off remote Pacific islet - Reuters UK
HONOLULU |
HONOLULU (Reuters) - Seeking to chronicle Amelia Earhart's fate 75 years after she disappeared over the Pacific, researchers prepared on Monday to look for wreckage of her airplane near a remote island where they believe the famed U.S. aviator died as a castaway.
Organizers hope the expedition will conclusively solve one of the most enduring mysteries of the 20th century - what became of Earhart after she vanished during an attempt to become the first pilot, man or woman, to circle the globe around the equator.
A recent flurry of clues point to the possibility that Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, ended up marooned on the tiny uninhabited island of Nikumaroro, part of the Pacific archipelago Republic of Kiribati.
"The public wants evidence, a smoking gun, that this is the place where Amelia Earhart's journey ended," said Richard Gillespie, executive director of The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR). "That smoking gun is Earhart's plane."
The group's research team had planned to set off by boat on Monday from Hawaii on a 1,800-mile (2,900 km) voyage to Nikumaroro accompanied by the technicians from a U.S. Navy contractor called Phoenix International who recovered "black-box" flight-data recorders from an Air France crash from the floor of the Atlantic last year.
But the departure was postponed for a day, until Tuesday, because of a delay in the arrival of a Kiribati customs official who is to accompany the expedition, said Stephanie Buttrill, a spokeswoman for the group. The team will spend 10 days at the search site, plus 16 days at sea travelling to and from the island.
Previous missions to Nikumaroro have unearthed tantalizing evidence that Earhart was there, including a cosmetic bottle from the 1930s that appeared to be jar of a once-popular brand of anti-freckle cream.
Also found were a clothing zipper from the '30s, pieces of a woman's compact, a bottle of hand lotion, parts of a woman's shoe and a man's shoe, a bone-handled pocket knife of the type Earhart carried and human bone fragments.
"We've found artefacts of an American woman castaway from the 1930s, but we haven't found anything with her name on it," said Gillespie. "We've tried to get contact DNA from things that were touched, and it didn't work. The environment was too destructive. The recovered bone samples were too small. The logical thing is the airplane."
FLYING INTO THE UNKNOWN
Earhart and Noonan were last seen taking off in her twin-engine Lockheed Electra on July 2, 1937, from Papua New Guinea en route to tiny Howland Island, some 2,500 miles away in the central Pacific. Radio contact with her plane was lost hours later after she reported running low on fuel.
A massive air-and-sea search, the most extensive such U.S. operation at that time, was unsuccessful. Earhart's plane was presumed to have gone down, but it has never been known whether she survived, and if so, for how long.
TIGHAR researchers theorize that Earhart and Noonan made an emergency landing on Nikumaroro, then called Gardner Island, about 400 miles (640 km) southeast of their destination on Howland.
Gillespie believes that within of days of its landing, the plane was washed over the island's edge by rising tides and surf, and was pulled down the reef slope into as-yet unexplored depths.
A recently enhanced 1937 photograph, taken three months after Earhart's disappearance by a British officer, shows what is now thought to be a detached landing gear assembly on the island's Western reef.
It is the same location where TIGHAR had hypothesized the plane might have landed and will be the geographic starting point in their underwater search.
Using underwater robotic submarines equipped with sonar, researchers will first map the sea floor, then probe the depths for objects that might be pieces of the aircraft.
If they find something promising, a third, remote-controlled submersible vehicle with camera, lights and a robot arm will attempt to explore the object up close.
But Gillespie cautioned that the conditions for such a search were less than ideal, explaining that the sonar probe works best over a flat, sandy bottom, rather than the craggy, reef slope the team expects to encounter at the site.
After 24 years of working on the Earhart case, Gillespie said he accepts that previous hypotheses have been disproved, and this seemingly promising one could be as well.
"That's scary. What if you look there and you don't find it? It might mean you're wrong. Or after 75 years of dynamic, destructive ocean activity, we could be absolutely right and not find anything," he said.
"It's hard not to see the parallel with Amelia's trip. You prepare the best you can and recognize, well, you're taking a risk. We're out to prove the case if it can be proven."

Sangh parivar moots Janam to take on People - Times of India
KOCHI: The sangh parivar may be finding it difficult to get a political toehold in Kerala. But this is not stopping the saffron brigade from attempting a sky route to Kerala living rooms by launching a Malayalam news and entertainment channel.
Named 'Janam', the project which enjoys the total blessing of the RSS, is expected to launch on Vijayadasami Day in 2013. The business model, ironically, is a xerox of their bete noire CPM's Kairali People concept. "The RSS or any other sangh organization won't have any role in day-to-day running of the channel. But we will enjoy their patronage,'' a source said. The channel will be promoted by Janam Private Limited, a Rs 100-crore company with NRIs and like-minded deshi sympathizers as its shareholders. The company has been registered with I&B ministry.
"We have been granted the title Janam. This Malayalm venture will be the first of our bouquet of regional channels,'' a senior Sangh worker told TOI. The channel will air news and programmes that reflect our ideology and philosophy. "Our bid is surely to inculcate more awareness about all values we stand for,'' he said. The channel will start operations from Aluva, near here. A majority of shareholders are Keralites working in the Gulf region,'' source said.
Sangh hopes to add more channels to its kitty by 2015. But given the plan by other political parties this may be too late as the CPI has already announced its project to simulcast news to all southern states in the respective regional language.
With Janam, Sangh hopes to join the league of political parties operating a satellite channel. The IUML's plans are on the anvil even as Jamaat has launched trial telecast of its Darshana.
Though Congress leader K Muraleedharan had obtained necessary clearances for his Janapriya channel, the momentum has been lost with his return to the party fold. Two media houses - Mathrubhumi and Kerala Kaumudi - are also in the fray with the former eyeing a November 1 deadline.
With Janam adding to the crowd of nearly 20 Malayalam channels, the percentage of viewership each channel can gain for their news and current affairs in a crowded sky remains a moot point.
There are 45 lakh homes in Kerala with cable TV connections.
JD(U) alliance is with BJP, not RSS: Nitish Kumar - Economic Times
Kumar said his party, the Janata Dal (United), was in alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party and not the RSS, which is BJP's parent organisation.
"I will react to BJP if it has to say something. But I have no relation with RSS and so it would make little sense if I were to react to what RSS has to say," Kumar said. "RSS had even opposed me in 2004, when I, during my speech in the Lok Sabha, advocated reservation for Dalit Christians and Dalit Muslims."
The chief minister had, in an interview with ET, attacked his Gujarat counterpart without naming him. Kumar had said BJP-led coalition's prime ministerial candidate should be secular, a comment that was interpreted as his opposition to Modi's projection to the post. Subsequently, Kumar's party made it clear that it would sever ties with BJP if the party were to foist Modi upon the coalition. RSS, however, questioned Kumar's assertion, saying there was nothing wrong if somebody who believed in Hindutva became the prime minister.
Nitish blasts centre on coal linkage
On Monday, the chief minister also renewed his attack on the Centre for denying his state coal linkage for capacity expansion of the state-run Barauni thermal power station.
"I rang up the prime minister. I told him if Bihar has to live in darkness, let it be. I have nothing to say if you are unable to do justice with Bihar," he said, adding that the PM had again assured him that he would look into the matter.
Kumar said after the coal minister turned down the state government's pleas, an all-party delegation called on the prime minister on April 6.
"We got the impression that the prime minister will act and see that the coal ministry revises its decision. But on June 29, we received a letter from the coal ministry saying coal linkage would not be feasible for BTPS. It seems the meeting with the PM was of no consequence. I have again spoken to the PM to register our complaints," he said.
RSS douses fire in Karnataka - Asian Age
The withdrawal of resignations by B.S. Yeddyurappa loyalists in the state ministry, was preceded by some hard talking at Sunday’s meeting between Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda, party state president K.S. Eshwarappa and dissident leader Jagadish Shettar—and a generous helping hand from the RSS.
Party sources said the RSS took the initiative to call the meeting to break the ice between the two groups. BJP organizing secretary Santhosh—a RSS man—was behind the strategy to invite Mr Shettar for the crucial meeting where he was told by the CM and Mr Eshwarappa to break away from Yeddyurappa as the Lingayat leader would never allow a fellow Lingayat to become CM.
They told Shettar, who has deep roots in the RSS, that many MLAs in the BSY camp were new entrants to the BJP.
Mr Shettar was also warned that the central leadership clearly favoured dissolution of the Assembly if he and his associates did not back off and withdraw their resignations. It was finally agreed that they would leave the decision to the central leadership after which Mr Shettar left the place.
Close associates of Mr Yeddyurappa however interpreted the meeting differently. They claimed that the CM in an attempt to broker peace, offered Mr Shettar the post of deputy chief minister (DCM), which was outrightly rejected by Mr Shettar who said he was annoyed with the fact that he was being ignored in the decision making process. “At the drop of a hat, you call Mr Eshwarappa and Mr Suresh Kumar for consultations. I stay next door but I am never invited for anything,” he said.
Mr Sadananda Gowda reportedly wanted Mr Shettar to get Yeddyurappa’s nod for the DCM offer to which Mr Shettar shot back that the CM himself should approach Mr Yeddyurappa who had elevated him to the top post. “I had no qualms in working under you as a minister after losing the CM election, you should have treated me with respect,” he said.
Sources said Mr Shettar and Mr Yeddyurappa seem to have made peace on the controversial August, 2011 election for the CM post when BSY backed Sadananda Gowda instead of his Lingayat colleague who lost the battle.
Mr Yeddyurappa’s logic now is that when MLAs wanted Sadananda Gowda to become CM, he could do nothing to prevent them. He also tried to put to rest speculation that he preferred energy minister Shobha Karandlaje to Shettar for the CM’s post saying he always knew few MLAs would back her, said the sources.
Three pracharaks including Keshubhai Patel supporter Damleji relieved from RSS working committee in Gujarat - DeshGujarat
Ahmedabad, 2 July 2012
RSS Gujarat region working committee meeting was held in Ahmedabad recently. Considering their old age, Shri Bhaskarraoji Damle, Narendrabhai Panchasara and Rameshbhai Gupta are relieved from the membership of executive committee of RSS Gujarat.
According to Pradip Jain, media team head of RSS in Gujarat all three veteran pracharaks will continue to provide guidence to RSS in Gujarat in future.
It should be mentioned that Damleji and Panchasara were occasionally seen in MahaGujarat Janata Party leader Gordhan Zadafia’s functions. Both of them were on the stage when MahaGujarat Janata Party had arranged Govindacharya’s public speech in Ahmedabad’s Paldi based Narottam Zaveri hall early this year.
Damleji is regular participant in the meetings held at Keshubhai Patel’s bungalow to discuss formation of third political front in Gujarat. Damleji had also participated in dissident BJP MLA Dr. Kanubhai Kalsaria’s march to Gandhinagar last year.
RSS pracharak removed for backing Modi's detractor Keshubhai? - Deccan Herald
Sending a strong signal to BJP dissidents in Gujarat, who have opened a joint front against chief minister Narendra Modi, the RSS has relieved three of its 'star' Pracharaks, including veteran Bhaskarrao Damle of their charge.
"Gujarat Regional Working Committee of RSS had taken a decision in its June 23 meeting to relieve Bhaskarrao Damle, Narendra Panchasara and Ramesh Gupta from their responsibilities," Gujarat RSS Prachar Pramukh Pradip Jain said today.
Interestingly, Modi has so far refrained himself from going public against his detractors who attacked him.
Even though axing of Damle, who had openly supported Modi's bete noire and former chief minister Keshubhai Patel, supports the view that Modi wields a strong clout in RSS, the latter denied that relieving Damle was anything to do with his backing to Patel, and was in fact done as per the RSS convention.
"It is a decision in consonance of the long-standing tradition of the Sangh. Damleji and other two are almost of over 80 years of age and they were not keeping well for quite long time. Looking at their age and health we have arrived at this decision," Jain said.
While Panchasara and Gupta were not supportive of Patel, Damle had openly supported Patel against Modi.
"As everybody will be aware that K Sudershanji also took a decision to relieve himself from the responsibilities of Sar Sanghchalak. So relieving someone from his duties is a routine process," Jain said.
Euro 2012 final sparks Twitter record - Football

Spain's victory in the Euro 2012 football final sparked a new sports-related record for tweets per second, Twitter said.
Sunday's final match resulted in 16.5 million tweets from fans around the world and total global traffic on the platform peaked at 15,358 tweets per second during the fourth goal, a new sports-related record on Twitter, the company said.
Spain defeated Italy in the final 4-0.
Twitter's Andrew Fitzgerald said the company's data charts showed how people followed the tournament on a moment-by-moment basis.
"You can see how often all of the teams were mentioned throughout the tournament and look at how mentions compare for competitors for each match," he said.
"These different perspectives should give you a strong sense of how people reacted during the matches on Twitter. Look, for example, at the big spikes in tweets that tend to occur during goals."
Twitter, which allows its members to post brief comments, links or pictures, claims to have more than 140 million active users, with the largest number being in the United States.
A recent survey found one in seven Americans who goes online uses Twitter and eight percent do so every day.
